UYR's Latest Rescues

FROM THE BOARD

A Tale (or shall I say “Tail”) of Two Heroes. May has been a very busy and extra special month for us at UYR. Why? Because of a very special little dog and a very special man who came together to find their “happily ever after.” In March, we had a request to accept a 3-year-old Yorkie named Toby. Toby was a sweet little pup who came to us completely blind, with a bad skin infection and in desperate need of a dental. Three is very young to be blind, so he was sent to a Veterinary Ophthalmologist for a workup. We learned that Toby had juvenile onset cataracts; one eye was too far gone to correct, but we were told the other eye was operable and there was a good chance that with a cataract removal and an artificial lens implant could enable Toby to see. The cost for this surgery was $2400 and we appealed to our amazing supporters for their help. Within days we raised the funds and Toby was scheduled for surgery. He was transferred from TN to a foster home in North Carolina where his surgery would be performed. We all anxiously waited for Toby to come out of surgery and then received the best news of all……Toby could see! He was exploring his environment, wagging his tail and his personality really began to shine.

Not very long afterwards, we received an adoption application for Toby.It was from a navy Veteran named Kevin who had been looking for a companion dog through the Companions for Heroes program. He had seen Toby’s story on our Facebook page and a love connection began. Companions for Heroes is a wonderful non-profit organization whose mission is to help every American hero (Active and former Military, Veterans, Law Enforcement, First Responders, etc.) find a furry companion and at the same time to save every shelter or rescue animal from euthanasia. Companions for Heroes (C4H) pairs human heroes with compatible canine companions which is a very wonderful thing. Once the connection is made, Companions for Heroes pays the adoption fee, provides a gift card to PetSmart or PetCo for needed items, provides cost-free training to certify the hero’s dog meets requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act, provides pet insurance and financial support, and conducts follow-up support for the life of the adoption. United Yorkie Rescue was delighted and honored to partner with Partners for Heroes to make Toby’s wish of a perfect forever home come true.

On 5/8/17 our hero, Toby was adopted by his hero, Kevin. Kevin is a naval veteran from the Vietnam era. In Kevin’s words, “I don’t consider myself a hero. I just did what was needed in a time that my country needed me.” Kevin served his country bravely and gave so much of his life for multitudes of people he will never know or meet. Kevin is very much a hero in our eyes and certainly in the eyes of his forever companion, Toby.

And now Toby wishes to tell his version of Adoption Day. It’s 11:40 a.m. and they are in the drive way . . . Where is Foster Mom? She's supposed to let them in. There it is, the garage door is opening! She's home! Hope they haven’t left! I hear them coming up the steps, they are all coming through the basement! Move over Roscoe! Out of my my way Zen! Max, will you PLEASE stop blocking the gate! This is MY TIME! I'm running now......I can see them! Out of the gate I ran and flew into the arms of furever Mom who was first (and I remembered my manners) and then Dad. My furever friend, my furever companion, my furever Dad! I am so excited! Hi Dad! It’s a boy! It’s me, Toby! Foster Mom told me you are a Hero and you sure look like that to me! I’ve been waiting furever to see you, and I really can, see you. We have so much to do, so much to see, so many places to go, so let’s go let’s go let’s go! Bye Foster Mom! I love you too! Tell everyone THANK YOU! For restoring my sight; for loving me, for finding me my very own humans; FUR EVERYTHING!

And just like that, veterinary check ups and medications were discussed, blankets, toys and food for the road dispersed, papers were signed, harness and leads were attached, the car door open and like a streak of lightening, in went Toby. He settled right down on Dad’s lap and was ready to occupy the co-pilot’s seat; Mom at the wheel. What a sight to behold! Formerly blind Toby meets his Forever Dad and we are certain the sight from Toby’s view was a dream come true.

To make Toby’s happy ending even better, a few days after his adoption, Kevin emailed everyone involved and shared this: "My wife and I are completely convinced that Toby is the perfect pet for us. He “asks” to go outside to do his “business” and has done so since the first day that we brought him home. He very rarely barks, which at first was a little concerning, until I finally heard a couple of “look at me” barks from him. He sleeps in his bed at the side of my bed at night, and does not stir until I do! And best of all he stays at my side constantly! I know that you allow at least 2 weeks to be sure that we and the dog are compatible, but I think I can state, firmly, that Toby will be staying with us forever! We can't thank you, his Foster Mom, UYR, and Companions For Heroes enough!

Kevin and Toby"

News Updates
FOREVER OURS - 09/01/2011
As of April 2016, UYR currently has 10 Yorkies in the Forever Ours Program. These 10 pups will remain with UYR for the rest of their lives. They receive vetting care as needed and this care is provided by UYR and your donations.

Total cost of vetting to date for our 10 Forever Ours Yorkies is: $30,079!! Donations for our Forever Ours pups is $16,240 which leaves us with a shortfall on these pups of $13,840.

We are happy to say that more than half of these costs have been covered by donations for the special little ones. Donations for each one are still needed to have money available for their continuing care needs.

We are always looking for people who would be interested in being a 'Sponsor' to one or more of our Forever Ours Yorkies! As a sponsor you will become a cherished person in this dog's life.

You would receive communications about your sponsored pup and your name would appear in their story on the Forever Ours page. If you are interested please contact Carl Sullenberger at treasurer@uyr.us treasurer@uyr.us
